Research shows that people engage in substance use for various reasons, including coping with negative emotions. In a recent study, the authors hypothesized that the three aspects of mindfulness 1) acting with awareness, 2) nonjudging of inner experience, and 3) nonreactivity to inner experience, among university students at the beginning of the first semester would prospectively relate to reduced alcohol and drug use throughout the first semester. They also expected low levels of emotional psychopathology to mediate these effects.
